چکیده

Megaloblastic erythropoiesis is known to occur in patients with chronic hemolytic anaemia. It has been described in association with sickle cell anemia (Oliner and Heller 1959 ), thalassaemia (Robinson and Watson 1963 ), congenital spherocytosis ( Delamore et al. 1961), and acquired hemolytic anemia ( Forshaw and Harwood 1963). In a survey of the literature up to 1962, Robinson and Watson (1963) recorded 16 cases and added one of their own. The youngest patient in their review was 11 89 years old, and there appears to be a paucity of reports in the younger age groups. The object of this communication is to report two cases of megaloblastic anemia complicating thalassaemia in infants. The characteristics of megaloblastic anemia associated with thalassemia.

Combined megaloblastic anemia with thalassemia is easily masked because of the loss of macrocytosis. We performed a retrospective study to compare the major parameters in 4 groups of subjects in order to show the characteristics of patients with megaloblastic anemia and thalassemia. Group A comprised 9 patients with megaloblastic anemia and tha-lassemia, group B comprised 10 patients with uncom...

Novel erythropoiesis stimulating protein exerts an effect on platelet function in uremia equivalent to that exerted by recombinant human erythropoietin.

CBC data for diagnosing classical megaloblastic anemia. Other features such as pancytopenia, elevated RDW, serum LDH and indirect bilirubin, as well as LDH1>LDH2 are also helpful. If a patient has a normal or low MCV, megaloblastic anemia is not usually the first consideration, which might lead to a missed diagnosis or delay in giving treatment. The present study shows that the combined disease...

Non-transferrin-bound serum iron (NTBI) in megaloblastic anemia: effect of vitamin B(12) treatment.

INTRODUCTION The abnormalities in iron metabolism associated with megaloblastic anemia are rapidly reversed by B(12) therapy in pernicious anemia (PA). Although non-tranferrin-bound plasma iron (NTBI) was previously shown to be associated with severe iron overload, its origin is unknown. METHODS AND RESULTS Four patients with PA were studied before and after B(12) treatment. NTBI was measured...

Megaloblastic Anaemia in Haemochromatosis.

IN 1877 Muller described a marked bronzed discoloration of the skin in some patients considered to have pernicious anaemia. This observation, confirmed later by Immerman (1879) is likely to be the first record of an association between a macrocytic type of anemia and haemochromatosis. Since that time French (1909), Roth (1915), Bork (1928), Cain (1940), Hotz (1944) and Harvier and Mallarme (193...
